I am sure you already know how to set SMART goals. There are tools and tips around how to do this part of the goal setting process. What is less often talked about is the actual journey. And really that is the most important part of goal setting! Why? Because the way you behave, think and act will determine your experience and also the person you become.

So one thing I would suggest is that you make it part of your goal setting process to think about who do you want to become when you reach your goal. First step is to find what emotions you are looking to gain from your goal? Are you after happiness, confidence or the like? Then think about the attributes that the person who has your goal would have? Is it empathy, resilience, positive mindset? Then think about the skills that person would need to have? As part of this process, look at the people that already achieved the goal you are working toward. What is it that you admire about them? What can they teach you? What skills and attributes they portray?

Write all of these down, and then look at the list you have come up with and devise a plan. What can you introduce into your life right now? Emotions you can choose, so you can decide to be happy to be working toward your goals or you can be miserable wait for the day you achieve them. However, I’d say the latter will not give you a happy ending…

Do you have any of the skills now that’s on the list? Do you need to fine tune them or can you start working on another skill that you earmarked as needed, but not yet have. Then think about how are you going to get that skill? What do you need to do? Who can teach you?

When it comes to getting the personal attributes aligned you will need to become mindful of yourself. Become the observer in your life. Review each situation as they happen. Are you practicing to be emotionally intelligent? Are you being empathetic, confident, if they were attributes that you wanted to have.

Become mindful of yourself, are you being the person you want to become? Are you being a positive role model? Are you being the best version of you? Not sure how to go about all this? Watch this Masterclass that explains it all…
