Madonna’s music success is apparent with her career spanning across 4 decades. She has been a trendsetter in the music industry raising the bar for new comers, she also set several fashion trends along the way.

Madonna was noticed as she was ready to put herself out there. She had plenty of criticism, yet a lot more successes. Being noticed at a young age is not enough to become the Queen of Pop and changing a whole industry, setting amazing new records along the way.

So what are the things that I think we can all learn from her?

  1. She knows sex sells and uses is

I am sure sometimes you are wondering why a 57 year old woman is in a pair of undies (mind you, I’d love to have her body at that age!) in a music clip, but that sort of behaviour is not new to Madonna. It is noted that she used to get in trouble for lifting her shirt back in high school just to get the boys attention.

She learnt that sexy turns heads, and she used it all her career. Not only did she just use sexy, she broke boundaries, limits and taboos. It got people taking notice, whether it is because they like it or not it doesn’t matter. She got publicity.

  1. Is clear on where she wants to be

Whether for the right reasons or not, it is clear to me that she always wanted to become someone famous. She set a goal for herself and followed her dreams. She was not afraid to put in the hard work that it required to get to the top.

Like her song Give it to me says – Give me a Baseline and I shake it. Give me a record and I break it…. She wants to be the best. No wonder Time Magazine ranks her in the 25 Most Powerful Women of the 20th Century.  She has also received acclaim as a role model for businesswomen in her industry, “achieving the kind of financial control that women had long fought for within the industry”, and generating over $1.2 billion in sales within the first decade of her career.

I’d say that is pretty good going.

  1. Is the queen of change

You cannot stay on top without reinventing yourself. She was labelled to be America’s smartest business woman for this trait alone by one professor at Cranfield School Management.

She has a great ability to know when she has reached her limits, adapt to the new, put the work in and ask for help to create the transition. She takes opportunities and won’t stop until she gets the outcome she is after.

With reinvention there was more controversy and more taboos broken. Not to mention the changes that the fashion industry saw with each change. Madonna set whole new trends as she evolved.

  1. Set up several sources of income

And I don’t just meant that because she can sing, dance and play instruments. She branched out and created an empire that saw her becoming a billionaire in 2012.

She has strategized her career and created other ventures to take her wealth creation into her own hands. She has created an empire, including a vast property portfolio, Hard Candy Fitness studios, Material Girl teenage fashion line, and Truth or Dare brand for shoes and parfume.

  1. Self Discipline

She is determined and passionate about what she does, enough to keep her focused and on track even in face of adversity. She expects nothing less but the best from herself, and as such she picks her team based on their excellence also.

  1. Your Image Matters

Whether she was someone you liked or not, Madonna’s image was something carefully created. It was something that her followers loved and copied. But even those that didn’t love her, knew her because of the impression she left on people’s mind.

Don’t try to shock for shock value alone. It has to come from the heart.

  1. Ignore Haters

Haters will hate. Naysayers will try to pull you down.

As Madonna put it in 2013 magazine article, “One of the many things I learned from all of this: If you aren’t willing to fight for what you believe in, then don’t even enter the ring.”
